Pursuing your passion despite gender stereotypes | Nigora Karimova | TEDxCAU Women

In this moving TEDx talk, Nigora shares her inspiring journey from a traditional career in banking to becoming a leader in the global cement and construction industry. Growing up in Uzbekistan, where construction wasn’t a common path for women, she rediscovered her childhood passion for construction and made the bold decision to pursue a second degree in Denmark—despite being a young mother and having no plans to leave home. Through every major life turning point, from job fairs in Copenhagen to construction sites in Vietnam, she faced the recurring question: To pursue or not to pursue? With courage and clarity, Nigora chose to follow her passion, returning years later to Uzbekistan to lead in the very industry that once seemed out of reach. Her story is a strong reminder that the most fulfilling paths are rarely straightforward—and that staying true to your dream, no matter how unconventional, is always worth it. Nigora Karimova is an innovative leader with over 20 years of international experience across Denmark, Vietnam, and Russia in the Cement & Mining, Renewable Energy, and IT sectors. Throughout her career, she has consistently broken barriers in male-dominated industries, generating over €500 million in revenue and redefining what leadership looks like. Currently serving as Head of Region for Central Eurasia at KHD Humboldt Wedag, Nigora is also a certified business coach and a dedicated mentor for the EBRD Women in Business programs—recognized as Best Mentor in Kazakhstan (2022) and Kyrgyzstan (2023). Passionate about empowering others, she continues to inspire individuals to challenge societal norms and pursue their dreams with courage and clarity.
