Librarians: The (not so) Quiet Pioneers. | Ali Kennedy | TEDxTASIS England Youth
Ali Kennedy delivers a powerful and transformative talk redefining librarians as modern pioneers in the digital age. She passionately argues that librarians are far more than book-keepers, positioning them as critical defenders of democracy, truth, and intellectual freedom. Through a dynamic and humorous presentation, Kennedy traces the historical significance of librarians while highlighting their contemporary role in combating misinformation, teaching digital literacy, and creating safe spaces for exploration and learning. She challenges traditional stereotypes by showcasing librarians as technological innovators, ethical stewards of information, and essential guides helping students navigate the complex landscape of digital content. Kennedy's talk is a compelling call to recognize librarians as multifaceted professionals who are not just preserving information, but actively shaping how future generations understand, critically analyze, and engage with knowledge in an era of overwhelming digital noise. Ali is the Librarian, a TASIS Leadership Academy Facilitator, and a House Tutor, with a deep passion for student wellbeing and inclusivity. With a background in academic libraries, she found her true calling in school settings, having worked in Scotland, Rome, Ascot, and now at TASIS England, supporting students across the American and IB curricula. Honours listed for the School Library Association's School Librarian of the Year Award in 2018, she went on to serve as Vice Chair and Chair of the SLA Board, as well as on local branch and book award committees.Ali is committed to bridging literacy and digital divides by championing equity of access to information. She advocates for the modern role of librarians as essential guides in an age overflowing with information. In her own words: "I do not know everything, but I sure do know how to find it." Outside of her professional life, she enjoys reading, advanced knitting, and the thrill of a good escape room.
