This talk explores the parallels between the ancient Mayan understanding of the cosmos and modern scientific inquiries into the possibility of intelligent extraterrestrial life. It highlights how both the Maya and contemporary scientists share a fundamental curiosity about our place in the universe, using storytelling and mathematical frameworks, respectively, to explore this question. It explains the components and uncertainties of the Drake Equation as an attempt to estimate alien civilizations, while the Fermi Paradox questions the absence of evidence despite such possibilities. Ultimately, the talk suggests that this shared human drive to "look up" fuels ongoing exploration and the search for meaning in the cosmos. Karla de los Angeles Archila Gamboa, a dedicated Grade 12 student is passionate about space exploration and astronomy. Inspired by the club's activities, Karla joined the NOVA Club in ninth grade and quickly became a leader, serving as president since tenth grade. Under her leadership, the club has flourished, organizing rocket competitions, stargazing nights, and scientific dissemination events for the entire high school community.Karla's commitment to space exploration has extended beyond school walls. In 2023, she participated in the inaugural (1st) Central American Space Congress and was part of the second edition this past September. As a co-founder, Head of Rocket Design & Propulsion, and Head of Scientific Dissemination at the Novice Guatemalan Institution for Innovation in Space Technology (IGNITE), Karla plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture of innovation and inspiring others to keep looking up.
