How immigrants redefine opportunity | Rajia Hassib | TEDxMarshallU

Immigrants are not magical creatures. In this talk, Rajia Hassib takes a deep dive into the unique perspective many immigrants like herself have toward opportunity. By pursuing disguised opportunities that can often seem more like uncomfortable inconveniences, it becomes possible to redefine opportunities and build new skills. Hassib shares how these experiences have helped her achieve her goals and how this strategy can help anyone, not just immigrants, unlock the door to success. Rajia Hassib is the author of two novels and several short stories and essays. Her first novel, In the Language of Miracles (Viking Penguin 2015), was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and received an honorable mention from the Arab American Book Award. Her second novel, A Pure Heart (Viking Penguin 2019), was one of Book Mark’s best-reviewed books of the week of its release. She has written for The New York Times Book Review, The New Yorker Online, and Literary Hub. She teaches English and creative writing at Marshall University. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
