Swimming Through Grain: The Robot Redefining Exploration | Dr. Lorenzo Conti | TEDxIllinois Tech

NOTE FROM TED: We've flagged this talk because it falls outside the content guidelines TED gives TEDx organizers. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdfWhat if robots could move through grain, sand, or even Martian soil as easily as a fish swims through water? Dr. Lorenzo Conti introduces Crover, the world’s first granular robotics system, designed to navigate and monitor materials like never before. This breakthrough technology is transforming grain storage by preventing spoilage, reducing carbon emissions, and optimizing food security. By leveraging the unique ‘Crover effect,’ the robot overcomes traditional resistance in granular media, enabling seamless movement and real-time data collection.Beyond agriculture, this innovation has vast potential applications, from environmental monitoring to space exploration, where rovers struggle with loose terrain. Dr. Conti shares how his team is developing autonomous navigation systems for granular environments, paving the way for a future where robotics can operate in previously inaccessible spaces. As Crover moves from research to real-world deployment, it is redefining the limits of technology and sustainability. Dr. Lorenzo Conti is the visionary Founder and CEO of Crover, creator of the world’s first "granular drone," the CROVER, which moves autonomously within bulk solids and powders to tackle critical challenges in agriculture and storage. Lorenzo's journey began with a PhD in Engineering at The University of Edinburgh, where his research in granular rheology led to the discovery of the "CROVER effect" — the core of his company's innovative technology. His work has earned global recognition, positioning Crover as a leader in subterranean and granular material solutions. An Enterprise Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Dr. Conti is honored for his pioneering contributions to engineering and entrepreneurship, exemplifying technology’s power to address pressing industry needs. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
