Uncertainty and free will can be what creates meaning in life. The challenge is both in taking a leap forward and recognizing that a leap can be a single step. By reflecting on free will, uncertainty, and the value of small, simple choices, Evan Smith believes we can start believing in possibility more. Evan Smith is a student at UNC Charlotte from Davidson, NC. He is majoring in data science with a minor in bioinformatics and genomics, after transferring from Coastal Carolina University. He has a passion for stand-up comedy, and the comedy scene in Charlotte has been a great outlet for this.He even opened his first comedy shows in Chicago this December. In addition to comedy, Evan provides commentary for Charlotte Division 1 athletics and hopes to publish an audio book in the spring.At Coastal Carolina University he worked with Chants with Recovery supporting student recovery awareness campaigns. After graduating from TED Ankara Koleji High School, he was admitted to Middle East Technical University where he had his B.S. in management in 1979 and M.B.A. in 1980. He received his Ph.D. in finance at Syracuse University in 1986. Before joining Bilkent University, he taught at Ball State University and Middle East Technical University. He has served as the dean of the Faculty of Business Administration between 1991-2004. He has also worked as a consultant at the Research Department of the Central Bank of Turkey between 1988-93. He taught at Michigan State University in spring 2000. He is currently a professor of finance and the Rector of Bilkent University.
