- 10:20Redefining success for a more balanced life | Sarah Luger | TEDxCégep Champlain St LawrenceFrom the moment we are put into school we are taught to "work first, play later." We are taught that relaxation is reward that must be earned. In her talk, Sarah Luger explores how this mindset is fuelling unfulfilling social media habits and is leaving us unable to be truly present in their lives.Sarah Luger is a social science student at Cegep Champlain St. Lawrence who feels the effects of this societal mindset firsthand. By giving this talk she wishes to make a difference in the lives of fellow students and workers by providing them with a call to action: to question the values related to work and productivity they have adopted. Sarah believes that by redefining success to include more than just academic and professional output, we can build a society in which individuals value all aspects of their lives equally. Thus creating a generation who lead more fulfilled lives and, most importantly, are fully present in all aspects of their lives. As a young person coming to the age where one starts to seriously ask themselves, "What do I want to do in life?" it is safe to say that I've got a lot on my mind. When this fast-paced part of my life gets overwhelming, I cope by taking the time to relax and take breaks... on social media. I think it is safe to say that this is a pretty universal experience. As a student interested in sociology and psychology, I have been inspired to question this habit: what impact is our constant social media use having on our individual lives and on society? In my talk, I will explore how this constant pursuit of stimulation is preventing us from finding genuine satisfaction in our students lives, future careers, and beyond. - 8:39AI: The Only Solution for Underfunded Cancers? | Tassnym Echchahed | TEDxCégep Champlain St LawrenceWhile medical research has made remarkable strides in treating many forms of cancer, certain variants remain trapped in the shadows of underfunding due to their lower public profile or perceived marketability. The impartial nature of artifical intelligence makes it a prominent ally in this fight, offering its analytical prowess equally to all cancers regardless of their prominence, demonstrating how technology's objectivity could help level the playing field in cancer research. My name is Tassnym Echchahed, I'm 18 years old and currently studying in the science program at CEGEP St-Lawrence. I aspire to make a positive impact in the world of robotics and artificial intelligence, since I believe they are fields often despised by the public. Indeed, the general belief regarding the threats imposed by upcoming advancements in artificial intelligence seem to outweigh the benefits that such a technology can offer to humanity. More often than not, the opposite turns out to be true, a reality that I hope to depict in the eight minutes where I detail how AI algorithms have the power to be a great help to underfunded cancers.
