calling in white folks to talk about race | Brianna Johnson | TEDxVail Youth
In her compelling TEDxVailYouth Talk, Colorado native and Bay Area climate advocate Brianna Johnson reveals why "calling in" rather than "calling out" white people creates the transformative conversations about race essential for dismantling systemic oppression. Drawing from personal experience as a Battle Mountain High School alumna working at the intersection of climate justice and racial equity, Johnson offers powerful strategies for engaging white communities in meaningful dialogue that leads to genuine action and lasting change. Through a framework built on love and active listening, she demonstrates how these difficult but necessary conversations can create more equitable communities while addressing our most pressing social challenges. Brianna Johnson was born and raised in Colorado and currently calls the Bay Area home. Her work centers on building equitable communities through climate solutions. Her passion is calling in white folks to engage in conversations about race so that they actively participate in deconstructing systems of oppression. Her free time is spent managing a yoga nonprofit and adventuring with her spouse and pup. Brianna is an alumna of BMHS (class of 2010). - 17:14Freedom needs security. Rethinking the liberal Illusion | Katja Gentinetta | TEDxBielBienneFor decades, the West celebrated freedom – and neglected security. In the belief that democracy and dialogue would safeguard peace, we dismantled our defenses, outsourced responsibility and dismissed resilience as illiberal. But today’s world – shaken by war, disinformation and geopolitical ambition – demands a new realism. In this talk, I will make the case for a strong, resilient liberalism: one that defends its values with clarity, confidence and courage. Drawing from history, political theory and present-day challenges, I will invite us to rethink our assumptions – and to understand why freedom without security is an illusion. If we want to stay free, we must be willing to defend what makes us free. Katja Gentinetta is a political philosopher. She teaches at the Universities of Zurich and Lucerne and is a member of various boards of trustees and foundations. Katja Gentinetta is a regular columnist and guest on talk shows, giving lectures and interviews in Switzerland and abroad. She is the author and editor of numerous books in social and economic issues. More recently, she has been working intensively on security policy issues, including a study report on Switzerland's future security policy.
