The Data Disparity | Lilla Bellish | TEDxWHRHS Youth

In this insightful TED Talk, we explore the often-overlooked connection between data and gender inequality. As algorithms increasingly shape our lives, it's crucial to understand how hidden biases within datasets can perpetuate and even amplify existing disparities. We delve into real-world examples of algorithmic bias, revealing how seemingly neutral technologies can lead to discriminatory outcomes in areas like employment, finance, and beyond. Join us as we examine the ethical implications of data-driven decision-making and discuss actionable strategies for creating a more equitable technological future. Discover how we can all play a role in ensuring that technology serves as a tool for progress, not a barrier to equality. Lilla Bellish is a sophomore at Watchung Hills Regional High School interested in data science, which inspired her talk, “The Data Disparity”. Lilla is a member of the tennis team as well as Waksman Molecular Biology Club, Academic Tournament Team, Environmental Club, and Science Bowl. She hopes to pursue a career in geoscience. “The Data Disparity” explores the impact of gender inequality in data, how it affects our lives, and how it can be remedied. She hopes her audience will question the biases present in the data we use. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
