What do you want to be buried with? | Dr. Jennifer Riley | TEDxAberdeen
What wouldn't you be seen dead without? Grave goods aren’t just for the Ancient Egyptians.
Putting significant objects and items in people’s coffins or graves when they die is hugely important for many people in contemporary Britain: almost all of us will need to make a decision about them at some point in our lives. Jennifer’s talk draws on her research into contemporary grave goods, and why we need and want them.Sometimes the objects we choose to send away with loved ones are beautiful; sometimes they’re sentimental; sometimes they’re funny; and sometimes they’re just bonkers. But they all have stories to tell about the identity of the person who’s passed away – as well as the people they’ve left behind. Dr Jennifer Riley, is an academic in the Divinity department at the University of Aberdeen.Jennifer is currently working on a Leverhulme Trust fellowship project exploring contemporary British ‘grave goods’– part of her broader research interests in death, dying, ritual and religion. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. - 11:42Uniformity is Overrated: Speak Up | Jovann Loh | TEDxBencoolen St YouthHistory’s greatest minds weren’t celebrated for blending in. They shattered consensus. Yet today, we rebuild the cages they fought to break, mistaking ideological purity for true diversity. The speaker seeks to contend that a world without disagreement is a world without growth. Jovann is a JC2 student at Eunoia Junior College, which means they’ve mastered the art of looking busy while procrastinating and surviving on dangerously little sleep. They have no fancy accolades, no groundbreaking research to their name, but they do have an unfortunate habit of going down ideological rabbit holes instead of doing actual work.Between cramming for exams and questioning their life choices, they’ve noticed something odd: everyone seems to think they’re the hero of history. Every ideology claims to champion freedom, justice, or equality precisely until you disagree with them. This talk isn’t about giving you the “right” answers (if they had those, they’d be much richer), but it might make you question just how much of what you believe is actually yours, and how much is just borrowed from the loudest voices around you.And if nothing else, at least it’ll be more interesting than another GP lecture.
