It’s not too late to save the future | Andrew Jones | TEDxBoston
Climate change is no longer a distant threat—its impacts are already hitting home. The speaker shares his personal experience with Hurricane Helene, including the heartbreaking loss of a neighbor. But here’s the good news: we have the tools to avoid the worst outcomes. What if we could foresee the next climate disaster before it strikes? While it's not a crystal ball, the En-ROADS simulator can preview the impact of potential interventions and, importantly, the path if we do not act. How might that shape our response? In this talk, discover how a global simulation is helping us chart a path to a safer, more sustainable future. The science is clear, and the solutions are within reach. This tool empowers users to engage with the available solutions and evaluate which targeted actions can slash global emissions, reduce extreme weather, and save lives. Andrew Jones is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Climate Interactive and a Research Affiliate at MIT Sloan. He is an expert on international climate and energy policy, a system dynamics modeler, a speaker, and a creator of policy simulations. He led the teams at Climate Interactive and MIT Sloan that developed En-ROADS and C-ROADS, two climate simulators used widely to engage global decision-makers. His climate policy work has appeared in media outlets such as The New York Times and The Washington Post. He co-accepted the ASysT Applied Systems Thinking Prize and the System Dynamics Society’s Applications Award as well as Dartmouth College’s Ray W. Smith Award for the most significant contribution to the status of the college. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. - 7:51Turn the Knob, Turn Your Life | Shaan Dave | TEDxWHRHS YouthCold showers may seem like a simple habit, but they can have a profound impact on mindset and resilience. In this talk, the speaker explores how embracing discomfort—like stepping into cold water—trains the brain to prioritize long-term benefits over short-term ease. By choosing discipline over immediate comfort, individuals develop mental toughness, focus, and a stronger sense of control over their actions. This shift in mindset extends beyond the shower, influencing decision-making, productivity, and personal growth. Rather than seeking quick gratification, those who practice intentional discomfort learn to embrace challenges for greater future rewards. This talk reveals how a small daily habit can reshape the way we approach life’s bigger obstacles. Shaan Dave is a seventeen-year-old high school junior. He swims competitively and has a passion for fitness and longevity. He also has experienced the overwhelming anxiety and apprehension inextricably tied to starting a new project or chasing a new goal. These two points may seem unrelated, but together, they led to his discovery of the power of a cold shower. While he initially took them for health and fitness, the ritual taught and continues to teach him daily about the power of thinking ahead. After nearly three years of consistency, he has discovered the impact of cold showers in facing challenges and starting new adventures. - 7:29Today's Changes, Tomorrow's Success | Atharv Gupta | TEDxWHRHS YouthIn Formula 1, the smallest adjustments can mean the difference between victory and defeat. In this talk, the speaker explores how small, intentional changes—whether in aerodynamics, pit stop strategy, or driver technique—can lead to massive performance gains. This principle extends beyond racing, showing how incremental improvements in daily life and business can drive significant success. By focusing on precision, consistency, and continuous refinement, even the most minor tweaks can lead to transformative results. Through the high-speed world of F1, this talk reveals the power of marginal gains and how they can be applied to any challenge. Sometimes, the smallest changes make the biggest impact. Atharv Gupta is a junior at Watchung Hills Regional High School who has long been fascinated by the challenges and excitement of adapting to new environments. Having lived in multiple countries throughout his life, Atharv has learned firsthand the significance of small, intentional changes to success. In his talk, he connects his passion for Formula 1 Racing, where split-second decisions and teamwork can lead to monumental outcomes, with his experience adapting to countries across the globe. - 6:42The Data Disparity | Lilla Bellish | TEDxWHRHS YouthIn this insightful TED Talk, we explore the often-overlooked connection between data and gender inequality. As algorithms increasingly shape our lives, it's crucial to understand how hidden biases within datasets can perpetuate and even amplify existing disparities. We delve into real-world examples of algorithmic bias, revealing how seemingly neutral technologies can lead to discriminatory outcomes in areas like employment, finance, and beyond. Join us as we examine the ethical implications of data-driven decision-making and discuss actionable strategies for creating a more equitable technological future. Discover how we can all play a role in ensuring that technology serves as a tool for progress, not a barrier to equality. Lilla Bellish is a sophomore at Watchung Hills Regional High School interested in data science, which inspired her talk, “The Data Disparity”. Lilla is a member of the tennis team as well as Waksman Molecular Biology Club, Academic Tournament Team, Environmental Club, and Science Bowl. She hopes to pursue a career in geoscience. “The Data Disparity” explores the impact of gender inequality in data, how it affects our lives, and how it can be remedied. She hopes her audience will question the biases present in the data we use. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
