The Freedom of Failing Other People’s Dreams for You | Nehir Kılvan | TEDxYouth@FMVErenköyIşık
Nehir Kilvan, a French literature student at Istanbul University, once had many dreams. In 11th grade, she discovered her true passion—books and literature. Though those around her believed her talents were being wasted, she chose to follow her heart. With a backup plan pushed on her by others, she still held tightly to her dream. Today, the dream she refused to give up is standing by her side. As she says: “If you don’t fail on your dreams, your dreams won’t fail on you.” My name is Nehir Kılvan. I was born on 19th November 2005. I graduated from FMV Erenköy Işık High school in 2023. Back in 11th grade I’ve spoken on TEDxYouth about The Importance of Having a Hobby. I’ve always been keen about sharing my experiences and voicing my thoughts. I’m currently studying French Language and Literature at Istanbul University and partaking in student clubs such as Sailing, Francophonie and Women’s Rights etc. at my university. I’ve been playing the piano since I was a child, I love dancing and really enjoy drawing. I’m so grateful to be given the opportunity to be here again. - 4:59The Power of Embracing: Turning Defeat into Lessons | Anya Bijaphala | TEDxYouth@RegentsSchoolFailure isn’t the end of the story—it’s just the start of a better plot twist. Anya is here to show us how defeat can actually be character development. Anya is a 12-year old student in year 7 studying at Regent's International School Bangkok. Being raised in Bangkok with a Thai family who highly values resilience and personal development, Anya developed the virtues of confidence and determination. From an early age, her perseverance and effort were rewarded. She was offered opportunities to enhance her interests of public speaking and leadership from as young as the age of 5, such as: securing the role of the primary head girl in year 6. Her other passions include various sports such as basketball and football. She trains hard for her preferred sports and consistently strives for enhancements in her performance. Anya aims for improvement in everything she does, recognising that even in the mistakes she makes there are opportunities to learn; hence she believes in the saying “It’s not what happens to you, but how you choose to respond.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
