I social media sono un campo di battaglia in cui i politici si confrontano durante le campagne elettorali, ma da anni sono anche dominati dalla disinformazione. Account falsi, notizie distorte e propaganda mirata hanno inquinato la conversazione politica, confondendo i confini tra verità e menzogna e amplificando le divisioni tra schieramenti.
Le elezioni americane sono ormai alle porte e diversi studi confermano come neppure questa campagna elettorale sia stata immune da tentativi di manipolazione. In particolare reti straniere di account falsi, spacciandosi per cittadini statunitensi, hanno diffuso narrazioni divisive su temi come il controllo delle armi e la disuguaglianza razziale, sfruttando anche contenuti generati dall’intelligenza artificiale.
E non è certo la prima volta. Risale al 2016 l’inchiesta sulla fabbrica dei troll russa, che provava a indirizzare il voto degli americani verso un candidato in particolare. In questo talk ripercorreremo la storia social delle ultime campagne elettorali statunitensi, vedendo come gli attori in gioco cambino e le tecniche diventino sempre più avanzate. Per poi provare a rispondere alla domanda fondamentale: un post su un social network può davvero influenzare i cittadini fino a cambiare gli esiti di un’elezione? Fino a che punto siamo disposti a farci persuadere da una macchina?Esperta di comunicazione della scienza e della tecnologia, collabora con case editrici di libri scolastici e con università e istituti di ricerca per la divulgazione dei risultati al largo pubblico. È autrice del libro Fake people – Storie di social bot e bugiardi digitali, (Codice – 2020). Inoltre ha partecipato nel team di realizzazione del documentario Demal Te Niew, finanziato da un grant dello European Journalism Centre e pubblicato in italiano sull’Espresso (2016) e in spagnolo su El Pais (2017).
