Salvatore Miccichè, a professor at the University of Palermo, reveals how he has managed to merge two seemingly distant worlds: "Cosa Nostra" and "Complex Networks." In his speech, he retraces the maxi trial of 1986, explaining how he used network theory to uncover the intricate connections among the key figures of a criminal system. With boldness, he applies sophisticated mathematical techniques to represent the mafia as a complex labyrinth, also analyzing the silent yet crucial role of women in Cosa Nostra and constructing bio-criminal profiles of the suspects. He then reveals how, through collaborations with the Prosecutor's Office, economic flows can be deciphered to expose mafia infiltrations in the business world. In conclusion, Miccichè emphasizes the immense potential of these scientific methodologies in supporting justice and law enforcement in the fight against crime.
Salvatore Miccichè is a researcher and university lecturer with a strong focus on physics, mathematics, and social sciences. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
