Emergency Procedures

TORNADO / HIGH WINDS

TORNADO / HIGH WINDS

  • If a high wind/tornado warning is received, seek shelter immediately in an area that is in an interior hallway / room or stairwell; at the lowest level in the building; and/or an area free of windows or glass.
  • Protect your body from flying debris with furniture and/or sturdy equipment.
  • Use your arms to protect your head and neck.
  • Follow instructions as broadcast via the LiveSafe app.

BOMB THREAT/EXPLOSION

BOMB THREAT/EXPLOSION

  • Call 911 and then Capital One Security.
  • Do not use cellular phones since this could set off the bomb.
  • If instructed to evacuate, do not re-enter the building until cleared by authorized personnel.
  • Untrained persons should not try to rescue people who are inside a collapsed building. Wait for emergency personnel.

EARTHQUAKE

EARTHQUAKE

If Indoors:

  • Drop to the ground; take cover by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and hold on until the shaking stops. If there isn't a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.
  • Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
  • Stay in bed if you were there when the earthquake struck. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.
  • Do not use a doorway except if you know it is a strongly supported, load-bearing doorway and it is close to you. Many outside doorways are lightly constructed and do not offer protection.
  • Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Do not exit a building during the shaking. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.

If Outdoors:

  • Stay there.
  • Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.
  • Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings, at exits and alongside exterior walls.

If in a Moving Vehicle:

  • Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.
  • Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake.

EVACUATIONS

EVACUATIONS

Before an Emergency Requiring Evacuation

In advance, review evacuation maps posted on each floor of the building and also in the yellow resource section of this app.

During an Evacuation

Take only important personal items that are easily accessible - such as car keys and purse. Do not wait for your computer to power down.

  • Follow instructions from emergency personnel and Capital One Life Safety Team Members.
  • Check doors for heat before opening and if the door is hot, DO NOT open it.
  • Walk, DO NOT run, push, or crowd. Use handrails in stairwells and stay to the right.
  • Keep noise to a minimum so you can hear emergency instructions.
  • Assist people with disabilities.
  • Unless otherwise instructed, move quickly away from the building towards the identified safe zone or assembly point before accounting for yourself using the LiveSafe app.
  • Watch for falling glass and other debris.
  • Keep roadways and walkways clear for emergency vehicles.
  • If you have relocated away from the building, DO NOT return until notified that it is safe.

FIRE

FIRE

  • Activate the nearest fire alarm if not already activated and call 911 as well as Capital One Security if possible.
  • Evacuate the building. Do not use elevators!
  • Feel closed doors with the back of your hand. Do not open if doors are hot.
  • Move well away from the building when evacuating and assemble at designated safe zones / assembly areas.
  • Do not re-enter the building until cleared by authorized personnel.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

  • If an emergency develops or if anyone is in danger, call 911 and then Capital One Security.
  • Move away from the site of the hazard to a safe location (upwind if possible).
  • Follow the instructions of emergency personnel.
  • Alert others to stay clear of the area.
  • Notify emergency personnel if you have been exposed to the hazard or have information about its release.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY

MEDICAL EMERGENCY

  • Call 911
  • Render first aid or CPR if you are trained to do so.
  • AED machines in your location are marked with a heart icon on the evacuation maps in the resource section of this app.
  • Do not leave the injured person.
  • Comfort the victim.
  • Be prepared to flag down responding emergency service providers.

POWER FAILURE

POWER FAILURE

  • Remain calm. Provide assistance to others if necessary.
  • Some Capital One locations have backup generators. If the power does not come back on swiftly, move cautiously to a lighted area. Exits may be indicated by lighted signs if the emergency power is operating.
  • If asked to evacuate the building by emergency personnel, exit as calmly and carefully as possible.
  • Do no re-enter the building until authorized by authorities. Listen for information regarding closings.

SHELTER-IN-PLACE

SHELTER-IN-PLACE

  • Remain calm.
  • Immediately seek shelter inside the closest sturdy building. Do not wait until you physically see a tornado or severe weather event to react.
  • Resist the temptation to go outside and check the weather conditions yourself. Once inside, stay away from windows, glass, and unsecured objects that may fall.
  • Seek shelter in interior rooms and corridors.
  • Avoid large free-standing expanses such as auditoriums and gymnasiums.
  • DO NOT use elevators. Await further instruction from emergency personnel.
  • DO NOT leave until an "All Clear" is received.
  • Capital One "go to" shelter-in-place locations are highlighted in yellow on the evacuation maps in the resource section of this app.
