Gentrification and its Ties to Historical Racism | Cora Hsu-Laborde | TEDxOakKnollSchool

Cora discusses the history of Newark, NJ, and how such practices as redlining and blockbusting caused the economic decline of that once bustling city, unfairly disadvantaging people of color. She focuses on the connection of that economic decline to historical racism and how gentrification of such cities as Newark is likely to further disadvantage its diverse communities. Cora is a senior and a second-year TEDx member, delivering her first talk on a pressing issue affecting communities worldwide. Aside from TEDx she also serves as Senior Class President, President of the National History Day Club, Co-president of the Society of Black Scholars, and Co-chair of the Student Diversity Leadership Board. She joined TEDx to refine her public speaking skills and foster reciprocal learning within the club. In college, Cora plans to study business and chemical engineering. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
