Why America’s Future Depends on the Success of Research Universities | Rhea Law | TEDxTampa

NOTE FROM TED: TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdfAmidst declining public confidence and questions about the value of higher education, America's universities need to demonstrate how they continue to drive progress, prepare students for successful careers, and support community growth. Imagine a nation without these institutions: fewer skilled workers, a reduction in research that leads to cures for diseases, and less innovation that generates products like smartphones. In this TEDx Talk, University of South Florida President Rhea Law explores the vital role of America's research universities in shaping our society. Using USF as an example, Law highlights how research universities contribute to local economies and industries, emphasizing the importance of supporting and engaging with these institutions to create a healthier future.  Rhea Law is the eighth president of the University of South Florida. The first USF graduate to serve as president, Law has deep ties within the Tampa Bay community and across the state of Florida.A proud fifth-generation Floridian who is passionate about the success of the state, Law is actively involved in corporate, public policy, civic, and charitable work. Throughout her career, she has held top leadership roles with many Florida-based organizations. She previously served as CEO and Chair of the Board of Fowler White Boggs, a Florida law firm. Her areas of practice included higher education, environment and land use, government, and economic development. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
