From Accent to Asset: Integrating Non-Native English Speakers | Myke Wilder | TEDxMechanicsville

The over two billion L2 English speakers in the world make English our Global Language, but only a fraction of them are truly fluent and companies and communities struggle to communicate with them successfully. In this TEDx talk, Myke Wilder explores the real source of the problem and challenges L1 English speakers to adapt their conversational English-speaking styles and shares strategies for creating an atmosphere of understanding and inclusion that leads to everyone’s success. Myke Wilder has lived his life between two languages, French and English. During a 28-year career in corporate communications he distinguished himself in Employee Relations, SAP Change Management, and R&D Reporting. In 2013 he changed gears becames an ESL Teacher, specialized in Business English. He often coaches English mixed with Management, using his clients’ daily work as lesson material. His corporate experience, his years working with a hearing disability, and his lifetime of working in his second language himself, have given him insight into the challenges his ESL clients face in their day-to-day work. That insight has been the genesis for his TEDx Talk. These days, he is turning his attention to the future of English; how the language is evolving, how the mass of English Second Language Speakers is forcing it to change, and where the future will take it.When not working, Myke is an avid cyclist and storyteller. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
