Haiku as Noise | Kei Iwata | TEDxUTokyo

Haiku is not about meaning or stories. It is a way of expressing what is already there—the things or scenes as they are—closer to sensation or music than to meaning or narrative. In today's society, where narratives and meanings dominate people's lives, and the world is rapidly becoming more interconnected and interchangeable, haiku may hold the power to affirm one's existence by capturing the moment. Due to its brevity, haiku may struggle to convey stories or meaning, which might cause personal experiences and emotions to fade. However, this very quality—its ability to straightforwardly embrace individual experiences and emotions without being confined by stories or meanings—is also its strength. While not advocating for haiku itself, adopting a haiku-like perspective might enable people to live more richly.Graduated from the Faculty of Letters in 2022. A member of the "Gunjou" group. His collection of haiku, "Hadae" (Fransudo, 2022), won the Tanaka Hiroaki Prize and the Haiku Poets Society Newcomer's Award. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
