The illusion of free will in fashion | Paula Serrano Lizarralde | TEDxYouth@ASM

Is your fashion sense truly your own? In this engaging talk, Paula challenges the illusion of personal style. Using cultural references—from movie montages to social media trends—she delves into how marketing and algorithms subtly shape our fashion choices. Merging philosophy with pop culture, Paula invites the audience to reflect on the real forces behind what we wear and consider how much agency we truly have. Paula Serrano is an 11th-grade student with a passion for fashion, philosophy, and creative self-expression. Her curiosity about the concept of free will and personal identity led her to explore how trends influence our choices. Paula designs and sews her own clothing, seeking authenticity in a world shaped by fast fashion and digital influence. She is also an active participant in the National Honour Society, theater, and MUN, and she helped organize this year’s TEDx ASM Youth event. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
