Redefining Strength | Todd Duermyer | TEDxSIUC
What does strength really look like in fatherhood? In this compassionate talk, Todd Duermyer opens a conversation about paternal mental health, often overlooked yet crucial to family wellbeing. Drawing on research and personal experience, Todd speaks to the silent struggles many dads face, including anxiety and postpartum depression. He calls for a cultural shift that uplifts fathers, supports open dialogue, and redefines strength as vulnerability and presence. Todd has been happily married to his wife Kristena for over 22 years, and they adopted their 2 kids (Chris and Kynleigh) through the foster care system. He joined SIU in 2019 after 13 years in the television broadcast industry. As a Cinematographer/Creative Video Producer for SIU’s University Communications & Marketing, he creates videos showcasing SIU on various platforms, leads a team of students and Graduate Assistants in video production, and is also one of the licensed drone pilots for the campus. Since 2022, Todd has served on the Civil Service Council, contributing to scholarships, fundraising, and honorary degree recommendations. Professional travel bloggers and content creators since 2011 and digital entrepreneurs. Daniele Dondi is Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pavia. He obtained a PhD in photochemistry by developing a new photocatalyst that is still used internationally. His research interests range from sustainable chemistry for materials development to studies on the origin of life. He is working on many international interdisciplinary research projects involving physicists, biologists and engineers. Recently, he has been developing a fully open-source robot system to automate dangerous manipulations in the laboratory. He is a co-author of more than 140 international papers, has a patent for the production of plastics from frying oils and dabbles in 3D printing This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
