How we can de-risk the investments needed to create a clean energy future | Andrew Lo | TEDxBoston
There is a dual challenge of meeting increasing global energy demand alongside an urgent need for transition to clean energy sources. Despite major progress in renewables, fossil fuel use has actually increased in recent years. Instead of thinking solely about an energy transition, we might look for "energy addition" opportunities—adding in new sources of breakthrough renewable technologies like nuclear fission, fusion, and geothermal for new demand. What's the catch? The development required to scale these novel cleantech projects to commercial viability requires significant investment. Promising tech in a lab can often hit the dreaded "Valley of Death", the point where increased risk and uncertainty is a major barrier to commercial deployment. Here's where financial engineering comes in, like deploying mega funds and adopting phased development models akin to biotech. These strategies can de-risk and attract the critical investment needed to get us through the Valley of Death and into a much more sustainable future. Andrew W. Lo is the Charles E. and Susan T. Harris Professor, a Professor of Finance, and the Director of the Laboratory for Financial Engineering at the MIT Sloan School of Management.Lo's current research spans four areas: evolutionary models of investor behavior and adaptive markets, artificial intelligence and financial technology, healthcare finance, and impact investing. He has co-founded several asset management and biotech companies, and sits on the boards of several for-profit and non-profit public and private healthcare organizations.Lo holds a BA in economics from Yale University and an AM and PhD in economics from Harvard University. Sahasrabuddhe emphasized the urgent need for young and talented individuals to actively participate in politics. He highlighted that despite being key stakeholders in democratic governance, youth engagement in politics remains low. Dr. Sahasrabuddhe identified major deterrents such as political uncertainty, caste-based dominance, and dynastic control. He stressed the importance of political reforms, advocating for transparent recruitment processes, internal democracy in political parties, and capacity-building initiatives to groom future leaders. Encouraging young minds to embrace idealism, seek mentorship, and engage actively, Dr. Sahasrabuddhe underscored that improving politics requires both societal awareness and grassroots involvement. Concluding on a motivational note, he urged the youth to become catalysts for change and contribute to building a stronger, more progressive democracy — a truly Viksit Bharat. Dr. Vinay P. - 5:48Food,Love and Culture Shock | Zirui Mo | TEDxNACIS Shanghai YouthThis talk reframes noisy Chinese restaurants as cultural expressions of "rènào" (热闹) - joyful communal connection. Through personal anecdotes, the speaker explores how cultural values shape dining behaviors, advocating for "dynamic thinking" to appreciate differences. The presentation moves beyond culture shock to celebrate how Chinese meals prioritize shared happiness, while thoughtfully suggesting balance in public spaces. A fresh perspective on how noise levels reflect deeper cultural values about community and emotional expression. My name is Mo Zirui from 5Oak, I love music and the violin. I am a violinist in our school's advanced orchestra. I am proud of it. I also like reading, street dance, drawing and snowboard. Reading seems to give wings to my imagination, Hip-pop makes me feel my passion and power, drawing makes me feel peaceful, and riding down the mountain makes me feel free. But frankly speaking, my biggest hobby is playing video games, such as Minecraft. I have a dream that I can invent an AI-robot and it can help me to do everything, then I myself can focus on my hobbies. My dad said it’s a wonderful dream, cause fun is the driving force of progress and he expressed all his best wishes to me. So I’m studying hard and hope to realize my dream as soon as possible.
