Break Cycle Barriers: Stop Hiding, Start Leveraging | Gaëlle Thalmann | TEDxZurich Women

NOTE FROM TED: While some viewers may find this helpful as a complementary approach, please do not look to this talk for health advice. This talk only represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of the menstrual cycle, exercise, and performance, which currently lacks scientific consensus and warrants further investigation. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdfHow can athletic training be adapted to align with menstrual cycle, unlocking the potential for improved performance? Gaëlle Thalmann explains the different phases of the menstrual cycle, their unique characteristics, and how female athletes, and anyone, can leverage each phase to optimize their training, performance and wellbeing. Gaëlle also addresses the limitations of research available for women in sports, highlighting the need for more inclusive studies. She emphasizes the importance of diversity in sports, not only for ensuring inclusivity but also for driving innovation in training, research, and policy. By recognizing and addressing the unique needs of female athletes, we can create a more inclusive and effective sports culture for all. Holder of the Swiss Goalkeepers' record for National Team appearances (109), Gaëlle Thalmann has played football for 20 years in the first divisions in Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Spain and has won the championship in the three first mentioned countries. The 38-year-old has participated in two FIFA Women's World Cup, two UEFA Women's Euro and five UEFA Women's Champions Leagues. After her farewell in the Summer of 2023, she moved to Ticino where she has been Head of Women's Soccer at FC Lugano until December 2024 and where she is currently U19 Goalkeeper Coach at Team Ticino, a male team, a Brand Ambassador for FC Lugano and a football expert for the Swiss Italian-speaking TV RSI, for which she comments the Women's National Team's games. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
