We Got Us: Redefining Community in Crisis | Sierra McClain | TEDxThird Ward
This TED Talk tells the story of how a devastating crisis gave birth to a movement. During the 2021 Texas freeze, as families were left without heat, water, or emergency support, the failure of traditional disaster relief systems became painfully clear—especially for marginalized communities. In that moment of urgency and collective need, Sierra McClain founded the #WeGotUs Response Collective, transforming mutual aid into a powerful vehicle for community-led disaster response. Rooted in interdependence and radical compassion, this talk is both a call to action and a testament to how movements are born when ordinary people decide that no one should be left behind. Sierra McClain is an educator, maternal mental health advocate, full-spectrum doula, community organizer, trainer and speaker. She founded Sankofa Mama Birth Services with a mission to center and enrich the birth experiences of Black mothers and to help them navigate the systemic challenges they face birthing in the United States. In 2021, Sierra established the #WeGotUs Emergency Response Collective to provide comprehensive disaster relief for pregnant mothers and families with small children, ensuring access to essential resources like diapers, formula, and hygiene products through community-driven efforts and strategic partnerships. He enjoys learning and is always looking for opportunities to meet new people. He is a budding photographer, as well as being an avid reader and also working on paper-craft, namely quilling. He values his academics and his extra-curricular, which is why he practices badminton and cricket. His favorite subject areas include math, science, and history.
