Why all artists should teach | Julian Elijah Martinez | TEDxYale
Drawing from his personal experience as both a working actor and a teaching artist, Julian Elijah Martinez argues that teaching is important to the journey of the artist and should be considered as integral to our careers as learning the craft and the business of our chosen profession. He first discusses his discovery of art, the teachers who helped shape his path, and how he found his way into the classroom as a paraeducator, substitute, teaching artist, and adjunct. He describes a few of the artist organizations he volunteers for, their philosophies and impacts, and how his art has ultimately been impacted by his students. Julian Elijah Martinez is an actor, photographer, and teacher living and dreaming in Brooklyn. He's known for his work on Wu-Tang: An American Saga, and Law&Order SVU, and has appeared on stages of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regionally. Currently, he teaches at Yale College and the New School. He is a founding member of the Encompass Collective, and The Visit and a current board member of the Developing Artists Theater Company. In his spare time, he co-hosts a weekly podcast called The Episode One Show and teaches group fitness classes. - 8:59From Vampires to Aliens: How Horror Reflects Humanity | SiYun Lee | TEDxBISHCMC YouthMany people experience that feeling of fright and horror as a survival mechanism: you sight a dangerous predator, adrenaline starts coursing through your body, your muscles contract rapidly, allowing you to run away and survive yet another day. However, as humans, we have come a long way from the ooga booga cavemen. We have come from telling our children about how we were almost killed by a wooly mammoth by the campfire to speculating how chatgpt will kill us all. In this talk, I want to go through the most iconic horror villain tropes from each era, from vampires to supercomputers. Are we as a society scared of these horror tropes because of an animalistic instinct to avoid predators or does it reflect something deeper - something that makes us human? By the end of this talk, I hope that I will introduce everyone to even more niche genres of horror and shake away the stereotype that horror is a cheap, juvenile genre that simply relies on jumpscares and cliches. I’m Siyun, an individual passionate about the sciences, and an avid reader of horror. Since the beginning of my obsession with the genre, I have read and become obsessed with many different subgenres of horror, from supernatural to slasher to cosmic to evolutionary horror.
