You think you have the right to an attorney...but do you? | Olivia Lombardo | TEDxYale
In criminal court, the Constitution guarantees a lawyer. But in civil cases—where your home, children, or safety are at stake—you’re on your own. 90% of low-income Americans face evictions, custody battles, and domestic violence hearings without legal help, while opponents often have expensive counsel. The result? A system where justice depends on wealth. From tenants wrongly evicted to families chased down by debt collectors, this talk exposes the hidden crisis of civil justice—and why "equal justice under law" collapses when you can’t afford a lawyer. Olivia is a senior at Yale studying Political Science as an Intensive major. Her research examines how race and class shape access to justice, particularly in civil courts where people lack access to legal representation. As a founding member and Co-Director of the Yale-Student Association for Small Claims Assistance (Y-SASCA), Olivia has worked at the forefront of addressing representation gaps through direct service. Olivia has worked in public defense in New Haven and Washington, D.C., and for U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand as a Women in Government Fellow. Olivia aims to challenge assumptions about justice and advocate for more robust legal protections for vulnerable groups using innovative solutions. In my free time, I love watching dramas and movies—getting lost in different stories and seeing the world from new perspectives. I also enjoy traveling, visiting new places, and experiencing different cultures. Every trip teaches me something new about the world and about myself. Today, I want to share some simple tips that have helped me feel more confident. I hope my experiences can offer you something useful, and through this speech, I’d love for you to get to know a version of me who truly enjoys life and isn’t afraid to try new things! - 11:32AI-generated voices | Sky Niu | TEDxQDHS Youththrough neuroscience and science, technology, and society perspectives, the human biases and limited viewpoints embedded within AI-generated voices, and their potential impacts on us. I’m Sky Niu, someone in deep love with humanity and the world around us. In an era where algorithms and emotions gradually become inseparable, AI technology makes our understanding of love, gender, and identity increasingly nuanced yet ambiguous. Is love an intangible mystery portayed by lyrics and poetry, or a quantitative product of biological instincts and hormonal reactions? Encoded gender expectations and quantified emotional paradigms are reshaping the identity coordinates of our generation. In my talk, I aim to explore, through neuroscience and Science, Technology, and Society perspectives, the human biases and limited viewpoints embedded within AI-generated voices, and their potential impacts on us. Only by doing so can we better safeguard our essence of humanity amidst the turbulence of technology.
