琵琶湖について、皆さんはどんな印象をお持ちでしょうか。日本一大きい湖?近畿の水がめ?
関東出身の私は、滋賀に来るまで「日本最大の湖」ということしか知りませんでした。
それでは、カワウという鳥は皆さんご存知でしょうか。鵜飼いに使われているウミウによく似た鳥で、一時琵琶湖では大幅に増加して、漁業や森に大きな影響を与えました。
これら琵琶湖やカワウと人との間には、実は長くて多様な歴史があります。そうした過去の関わりを紐解くことで、未来に向けて私たちが自然や生き物とどのように付き合っていったらいいのかを、考えるためのヒントを得ることができます。
琵琶湖の魅力、カワウの面白さを、多くの方々に感じていただきたいと思っています。 滋賀県立琵琶湖博物館館長を務めております。当館は、「湖と人間」をテーマにした総合博物館で、水族展示室では生きた琵琶湖の生き物も見ることができます。
