Civil Servants: Heroes or Hurdles? | Edwina Mazunda Mupotola | TEDxLusaka

Why do civil servants often fall short of expectations? Edwina takes us on a candid journey through the realities of public service, where enthusiasm meets systemic barriers. She shares personal anecdotes and insights and exposes how resource shortages, political interference, and public indifference create a perfect storm of inefficiency. With wit and wisdom, she challenges citizens to reconsider their role in the system—advocating for integrity, empathy, and active participation to empower a struggling workforce. This thought-provoking talk will change how you view the civil service and your role in its transformation. Edwina is a seasoned lawyer and litigator. She has spent six years at three local authorities serving as in-house Counsel. She is the Co-Founder of Dear Rookie Advocate (www.dearrookieadvocate.com), a mentorship platform designed to guide and empower emerging lawyers. The site helps bridge the gap between aspiring and seasoned legal professionals. Edwina has served as a Council Member of the Law Association of Zambia, Chairperson of the Toastmasters International Southern Africa Ethics Committee and Editor of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association Africa Hub newsletter. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
