Overcoming Systemic Mistrust and Rigid Policies | Manon van Hoeckel | TEDxEindhoven

This story highlights how providing young people in need with financial stability and autonomy, through a "building budget" pilot program, can empower them to rebuild their lives, fostering independence, self-discovery, and improved mental health. It argues that true equality requires tailored investments that trust individuals to identify their own needs, challenging systemic mistrust and rigid policies that often perpetuate inequality. Manon van Hoeckel is a social designer who creates tools to foster social impact, starting from the daily lives of her target group and encouraging connections between strangers. Her project, "Het Bouwdepot," provides vulnerable young people with an unconditional income for a year, empowering them to shape their futures—a success story Manon shares through her insights. She aims to inspire others to engage in designing society together, breaking away from the notion that it must be crafted within an ivory tower. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
