The Healing Power of Toys: How Toys Help People Cope with Trauma | Shelly Clevenger | TEDxSHSU
Toys have the unique power to help people of all ages cope with trauma. In this talk, Dr. Shelly Clevenger explores ways in which toys can help people heal through play therapy, collecting toys, and the tactile nature of toys. She challenges us to reconsider our own relationship to toys and the power of play. Shelly Clevenger, Ph.D., is Department Chair and Professor in the Victim Studies Department at Sam Houston State University (SHSU). She has authored many peer-reviewed journal publications, book chapters, and books on victimization. Dr. Clevenger had the honor to present her research on victimization at the United Nations Women in New York City and a U.S. Congressional Briefing in Washington, D.C. Dr. Clevenger is the recipient of numerous national awards for her teaching, activism, and research. The SHSU College of Criminal Justice has also recognized her with awards for her teaching and community engagement. In her spare time, Dr. Clevenger is an avid vintage toy collector, voracious comic book reader, and Disneyland enthusiast. She loves to spend time with her family. Mike Seville began his career with the Virginia Department of Corrections in 1995 as a Corrections Officer at Nottoway Correctional Center. During his time at Nottoway, he held the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Institutional Training Officer, and Chief of Housing & Programs. In 2018, Mr. Seville was promoted to Assistant Warden at Haynesville Correctional Center. In 2020, he was promoted to Superintendent at Haynesville Correctional Unit 17 before transferring to Sussex I State Prison in 2021. In May 2022, Mr. Seville was promoted to Warden at Haynesville Correctional Center before transferring to Green Rock Correctional Center as Warden in November 2022. Mr. Seville has served as a trainer at the Academy for Staff Development and Statewide Evidence-Based Practices Manager at Headquarters. Mr. Seville has most recently been tasked with transitioning Lawrenceville Correctional Center from a privately operated prison to a Virginia Department of Corrections-operated facility.
