Why everyone's accent tells a story | Enny Ogunyemi | TEDxUNCCharlotte

Everyone has an accent. Some people can be judged for their accent, while others celebrated. Accent bias can impact how we perceive others' trustworthiness and treat them. However, accents can be powerful invitations to learn new cultures, histories, and stories. When we view accents as unique narratives, we can create societies that better value diversity. Eniolaoluwa Ogunyemi (Enny) holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Psychology from UNC Charlotte and is currently pursuing a graduate certificate in Cognitive Science. Upon completion in Spring 2025, she plans to further her studies with a master's in Cognitive Psychology.Originally from Nigeria, Enny is an international student currently studying in the United States. In addition to her studies, she serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University Center for Academic Excellence (UCAE). Outside of academia, Enny enjoys crocheting, listening to music, and getting lost in fictional novels. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
