After more than 10 years of focusing on plant biotechnology, particularly on banana plants, Listya Utami Karmawan and her supervisory team in her advanced studies discovered a startling fact: bananas, one of the fruits deeply ingrained in the lives of Indonesians, are at risk of extinction due to Fusarium wilt disease. For Indonesians, bananas are not just a food staple but also hold deep cultural and culinary significance. Bananas often feature in traditional customs, religious celebrations, and as symbols of offerings. Their leaves are commonly used as wrappers for various traditional snacks and dishes, while the fruit itself serves as a main ingredient in iconic dishes like fried bananas (pisang goreng) and banana compote (kolak).Through her doctoral research, Listya offers a promising alternative solution by leveraging "microbial allies," beneficial bacteria that can help bananas survive this deadly disease. Interestingly, the benefits of these microbial allies extend beyond bananas. They also play crucial roles in various aspects of life, such as serving as biofertilizers to boost crop productivity and as key components in fermented foods rich in probiotics, which promote human health. In this session, Listya will unveil how these microbial allies have a significant impact on food sustainability and our daily lives. Listya Utami Karmawan is a lecturer in the Biotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Biosciences, Technology, and Innovation, at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. As an animal lover, she chose to focus her research on plant biotechnology, allowing her to contribute to scientific advancements without involving animals in experiments.
