Revisiting the Superpredator Myth: What Have We Learned? | Arielle Baskin-Sommers | TEDxYale

The prophecy of juvenile superpredators led nearly every state in the United States to expand laws that removed children from juvenile courts and exposed them to adult courts and adult punishments. Was this prophecy true? Was it worth locking juveniles up in adult prisons for long sentences? The simple answer is no. In this talk, Dr. Arielle Baskin-Sommers reviews what psychological science can teach us about adolescents who commit violent crimes. Dr. Arielle Baskin-Sommers, Yale University, is a clinical psychologist. Her work focuses on identifying and specifying the cognitive, emotional, and environmental mechanisms that contribute to antisocial behavior (e.g., substance use, criminal activity, aggression). She uses findings from her research to develop novel experimental tasks, assessments, and intervention strategies aimed at developing more humane (and scientific) approaches to addressing mental health and crime. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
