How can we fix a broken conservation system? | Brecker Ferguson | TEDxNortheasternU

Join Brecker Ferguson as he explores the warlike state of conservation and shares his firsthand experience witnessing the violent reality of rhino poaching in South Africa. Hear about how the anti-poaching efforts clash with global crime, economic injustice and its deep-rooted legacies of Apartheid. This Talk challenges our understanding of conservation by shedding light on the complex human motivations behind poaching and questioning the sustainability of a system that prioritizes wildlife over the people who live alongside it. Brecker Ferguson is a sustainability scholar graduating from Northeastern University this spring. His research focuses on the intersections of the environment, society, and economics worldwide. He has worked as a nonprofit consultant, a conservation researcher in South Africa, a nonprofit program director in South Africa, and in business development for a climate tech startup. Brecker loves to travel and learn about places near and far. In his free time, Brecker plays the cello and writes, and he expects to publish a memoir later in 2025. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
