Smashing STEM Stereotypes | Kim Everitt | TEDxUniversity of Hertfordshire

In a world that depends on innovation, why do so many still feel excluded from careers in science and technology? This talk explores the core ideas behind “Smashing Stereotypes and Supporting the Next Generation with Careers in STEM.” It closely examines how cultural norms, bias, and outdated representations can discourage young people, especially women, from pursuing technical fields. With a focus on visibility, mentorship, and early encouragement, this talk presents a compelling case for building a more inclusive STEM pipeline. Audiences are invited to reflect on their assumptions, consider who gets left out of the conversation, and explore how small actions can have significant impacts. Through stories and solutions, this TEDxUniversityofHertfordshire talk is a rallying cry to educators, leaders, and learners: break the mould, change the narrative, and empower the future of innovation. Kim Everitt is a Transport Systems Engineer at Catapult and a proud Herts alumna with a degree in Automotive Engineering with Motorsport. Named one of the Top 50 Women in Engineering by the Women’s Engineering Society, Kim actively promotes STEM careers and serves on the Society’s Early Career Board. Her TEDx talk focuses on smashing stereotypes and supporting young people, particularly women, in pursuing success in technical fields. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
