Insecurities in all of us. | Nodirabegim G'ofurova | TEDxLeader Education Center Youth Live
Insecurities are not signs of weakness but reminders that we’re human — growing, evolving, and real. True confidence isn’t about having none — it’s about owning them, reframing them, and showing up anyway. - 17:54Reimagining Humanity, Reprogramming AI | Ebin Deni Raj | TEDxAGBSKochiIn his thought-provoking TED Talk, Ebin Deni Raj explores the profound impact artificial intelligence (AI) is having on our lives and urges us to critically examine the kind of humanity we are embedding into machines. He begins by illustrating how AI algorithms now influence key decisions in society—ranging from job applications to social welfare—yet often in ways that are opaque and inherently biased. Ebin highlights the case of Amazon’s hiring tool, which penalized resumes with the word “women,” demonstrating how AI can amplify existing societal prejudices rather than simply reflecting human behavior.Ebin also introduces the “Clever Hans” phenomenon, where a horse was believed to solve math problems, but was actually just reacting to subtle human cues, paralleling how AI mimics intelligence without true understanding. He further delves into the dangers of unintended consequences with the "Cobra Effect," where well-intentioned solutions can backfire when the wrong metrics are prioritized, underscoring how AI systems, though powerful, can have unforeseen and harmful outcomes.Drawing from a real-world case, Ebin describes a social welfare project where identical profiles were given different results due to hidden algorithmic biases. This case illustrates the urgent need for greater transparency, fairness, and accountability in AI systems. He emphasizes that AI should not be designed passively, but actively with human values, goals, and dignity in mind.Concluding his talk, Ebin argues that to create AI that truly serves humanity, we must first understand both AI technology and ourselves—our values, flaws, and aspirations. Only through this understanding can we ensure that AI enhances, rather than diminishes, human dignity and societal well-being. Dr. Ebin Deni Raj, faculty at IIIT Kottayam, is a leading advocate for Responsible AI and founder of FACTSH Lab, which focuses on fair, safe AI for social challenges. He developed a Responsible AI Toolkit for enterprises and governments and leads global projects like one funded by the Volkswagen Foundation on explainable AI. Co-author of the ‘AI for Everyone’ booklet, he promotes AI literacy in India. His awards include Microsoft’s AI for Earth (2019) and CSI’s Best Ph.D. Thesis Award. A jury member for AI Gamechanger 2022 and Aegis Graham Bell Awards, Dr. Ebin is a global voice on AI ethics, using his TEDx talk to champion tech that serves humanity. - 17:38Engineering Life: From Genomes to Cures | Sam Santhosh | TEDxAGBSKochiSam Santhosh’s talk focused on the transformative power of genomics in understanding human identity, diversity, and health. He explained how the genome—the complete set of genetic instructions—acts as the blueprint of life, not only defining who we are but also explaining the subtle variations that make each person unique. Through examples like hemophilia in European royalty and data from the GenomeAsia 100K project, he illustrated how genetics connects deeply with history, culture, and social constructs like caste. He emphasized that while humans share a common genetic ancestry, individual genomes reveal valuable insights into health risks and inherited conditions. With over a million children in India born each year with genetic disorders, he stressed the importance of early genetic screening. He also discussed how the dramatic drop in the cost of genome sequencing is making personalized healthcare more accessible. The talk concluded with a look at future breakthroughs in medicine—such as CRISPR, cell therapies, and engineered antibodies—highlighting how genomics is reshaping the way we diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases. Sam Santhosh is a seasoned entrepreneur with 35 years of experience. He founded Calsoft and took it public before leading India’s genomics revolution through SciGenom Labs. He incubated firms like MedGenome, AgriGenome, Saksin Life Sciences, and MagGenome. MedGenome, launched in 2010, raised $120M and became India’s top genomic diagnostics firm. Called the 'Genome Man of India', he was named among Goldman Sachs’ Top 100 intriguing entrepreneurs in 2019. In 2022, he exited all companies to focus on genomics education via the SciGenom Research Foundation and is now building a 27-acre Hortus Malabaricus-inspired botanical garden in Thrissur. As advisor to K-DISC, he proposed the Kerala Genome Data Centre. An IIM Calcutta MBA, Sam lives in San Francisco and Kochi, traveling globally to explore museums and gardens.
