- 11:43Art Legacy: Neill James & Ajijic's Children's Art Program | Jesus Victoriano Lopez Vega | TEDxAjijicWhat happens when an expatriates woman moves to a small Mexican village and has an idea to open a Spanish library, and to teach local children art? It's an idea that Neill James had over 70 years ago in the small Mexican town of Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico, and has developed some of Mexico's most prolific "legacy artists." Jesus Lopez Vega explores the intersection of the personal and the cultural in his paintings, sculpture and murals. He has works in private art collections all over the world, and has exhibited in galleries throughout Mexico. In Jesus’s mystical works you will find the visions of the ancients, the energy of Mexico’s native traditions, the schemes of its political reformers, and an individual’s psychological experience of it all. Jesus is largely a self-taught artist, and he credits his childhood immersion in art as the reason he has found a high-level of artistic success today. “I was so fortunate to find myself at the Neil James’ children’s art program each Saturday,” he says. “There, I learned technique and was given confidence.” Whenever he’s not honing a new artistic vision, Vega can be found teaching in volunteer capacity at the ongoing Children’s Art Program at the Lake Chapala Society in Ajijic, founded forty five years ago by Miss James, one of Ajijic’s original expatriates. - 1:22The Chinese Zodiac Culture | Zixuan Yan | TEDxWuxi Yinghe Bilingual SchoolThe Chinese zodiac, an integral part of Chinese culture. The zodiac, consisting of twelve animals—Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig—has been part of Chinese traditions for thousands of years. Each animal represents a year in a 12-year cycle and is believed to influence personality and destiny. For instance, those born in the Year of the Rat are thought to be clever, while Dragons symbolize strength and bravery. Beyond individual traits, the zodiac is closely tied to family and celebrations, especially during the Chinese New Year, when families reunite to welcome the new zodiac animal with fireworks, food, and red envelopes. This tradition highlights the Chinese values of family, tradition, and connection to nature. A Grade7 student from Yinghe Bilingual School.
