The Hidden Cost of Your Devices | Francisco Jerónimo | TEDxLisboa

Old phones, tablets, and laptops — forgotten in drawers or tossed into landfills. Francisco Jerónimo unpacks the true cost of our tech consumption: environmental damage, human exploitation, and millions of tons of e-waste. But it doesn’t have to be this way. From EU regulations to the growing market for refurbished devices, he reveals how the circular economy offers a real path forward — one already within our reach. Change begins with the choices we make. Francisco Jeronimo is Vice President for Devices at IDC EMEA. With over 25 years of experience in the IT and mobile industries, Francisco oversees research and data services, delivering strategic insights to some of the world’s leading consumer electronics brands. Based in London, Francisco’s expertise extends to the circular economy, with a particular focus on its application in the mobile sector. He has analysed how sustainable practices, such as device refurbishment and recycling, contribute to environmental conservation and economic growth. His insights have been critical in understanding the transition from linear to circular models in technology industries. A recognised thought leader, Francisco has been a keynote speaker at numerous conferences, and his research has been featured in leading industry and business publications, including The Financial Times, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, Bloomberg, World Economic Forum, The BBC and many others. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
