Why the Future of Ceramics Depends on the Past | Emily Johnson | TEDxUniversityofStaffordshire

What happens when an entire industry, and its centuries of skill, risks disappearing? Fifth-generation potter Emily Johnson shares the story of Stoke-on-Trent’s once-thriving ceramics industry and her fight to keep it alive through innovative design and human craftsmanship. In an age of automation, she makes a compelling case for why the human hand still matters. Emily is the fifth generation of the Johnson Brothers pottery family and now leads 1882 Ltd., a contemporary ceramics company blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design. After a career in advertising and a return to design through a master’s in Architectural Interior Design, she now works with a team of skilled potters to create everything from everyday ceramics to bold works of art. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
