Belonging Starts with Heritage | Tama Coxshall | TEDxSt Helier
Are you satisfied with your belonging and your history? Join an increasing number of people
around the world who are connecting with their local heritage, reclaiming their cultural
identity, and developing a sense of empowerment. In an era where we have a choice to
change the world and make an impact, the best place to start is often at home, within your
local community, because everything you need to feel like you belong is right here. Tama Coxshall is a 6th form student at Hautlieu School and a passionate advocate for Jèrriais—the native language of Jersey. Known online as Bordelot on TikTok, Tama is using her voice and platform to breathe new life into a language and culture she grew up without but now fiercely embraces.
After delivering a moving reading at Jersey’s 80th Liberation Day ceremony, Tama continues to champion the power of reconnecting with heritage as a path to belonging and wellbeing. In this talk, Tama explores how rediscovering Jèrriais contributed to a strong identity and sense of belonging to the island. He highlights why preserving and celebrating local culture matters for everyone. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
