- 10:05How can film forge unlikely alliances to face climate change? | Roger Sorkin | TEDxBostonNOTE FROM TED: This talk only represents the speaker’s personal views. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdfClimate change and its implications are nuanced issues that require coordinated approaches and collective decision-making. With a communication system that grows more cluttered and fragmented by the day, it’s harder than ever for people to find common ground to solve problems that affect us all. Film has the unique power to break through stale narratives and reframe discussions around climate change in the name of national security and economic opportunity. What if seemingly disparate leaders from environmental activists to military officials could agree to join forces to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, and in the process, reallocate our most precious resources? We don't have to agree on the reasons to act on the best solutions. The unlikeliest alliances can begin with a conversation. Roger Sorkin is an award-winning film producer, writer and director, and the founder of the American Resilience Project, a nonprofit that influences public policy, ignites civic action, and drive investments that strengthen environmental, economic, and social resilience. He has served a wide range of nonprofit, academic and government institutions, including the UN World Food Programme, USAID, Indianapolis Airport Authority, U.S. Global Leadership Campaign, NATO, and many others. He has taught energy and environmental communication at the Fordham University Gabelli School of Business, and is a featured speaker to diverse audiences across government, academia, NGOs, faith groups, trade associations and others. He received a B.A. in anthropology from the Johns Hopkins University, an M.A. in communication from Stanford University, and happily resides in the hills of western Massachusetts with his wife and three children, who help take his mind off civilization’s unprecedented challenges.
