The Silent Epidemic: Self-Harm | Glory Ogon | TEDxBloombreed School Youth

When we think of self-harm, we often imagine physical injuries—but what if it's more common, more subtle, and more socially accepted than we realize? In this eye-opening talk, the speaker challenges the narrow definition of self-harm and exposes a silent epidemic—one that hides in our daily habits, mindsets, and choices. She reveals how overworking, perfectionism, emotional detachment, toxic relationships, and even chronic worrying can be forms of self-inflicted harm that we normalize and sometimes celebrate. This talk calls out the everyday ways we damage ourselves in the name of strength, success, and survival. It’s a bold call to reflection and healing in a world where everyone, in one way or another, might be hurting themselves without even knowing it. Watch to discover how you, too, might be participating in self-harm—and how awareness is the first step toward breaking the cycle. Glory is a Year 11 student who is a storyteller at heart and uses poetry or music to get her message across. She finds meaning in words and uses them to express her beliefs, she challenges perspectives and connects with others on a deeper level. She is an avid member of her school’s Book Club where she gets exposure to a lot of different authors and their ideas. She believes that sharing our stories can spark change and bring people together. She hopes to become a successful lawyer This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
