The Ethics of Eloquence | Phuong Nhi Nguyen | TEDxBVIS HCMC Youth

Phuong Nhi was inspired to examine why society equates “sophisticated” language with intelligence and credibility. In her talk, she draws on sociological and post-colonial theories to interrogate the power dynamics embedded in language, challenging the notion that persuasive communication follows a fixed standard. Through this perspective, Phuong Nhi hopes to empower students to embrace their unique voices and modes of self-expression, redefining what it means to be articulate and impactful. Phuong Nhi is a Year 13 individual from British Vietnamese International School, HCMC, who was inspired to examine why society equates “sophisticated” language with intelligence and credibility. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
