What makes a great leader? In this TEDx talk, Lorenzo shares a personal story from the swimming pool that reveals the surprising power of communication, rhetoric, and debate. Through a moment with his coach, he discovers that leadership isn’t about giving orders, it’s about inspiring belief. From powerful speeches to everyday conversations, this talk explores how the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively is one of the most essential skills any leader can have. Whether you're leading a team, mentoring a sibling, or just trying to share your ideas with confidence: this talk is for you.#Leadership #PublicSpeaking #TEDx #Communication #Debate #Rhetoric #Inspiration #PersonalGrowth #StudentSpeaker Meet Lorenzo Auricchio! Lorenzo is a very sociable person, who doesn’t hesitate to start a conversation. His love for talking will be revealed when he delivers the speech “Debate, Rhetoric and Public Speaking: how mastering rhetoric and debate can improve communication and leadership skills”. His speech is well crafted to resemble his character as Lorenzo has previous experience in different debate competitions such as CICAE where he won best speaker and SYMUN where he won Best Delegate, therefore we can be confident to follow his advice. Apart from being curious and being well informed on current news, Lorenzo sticks to various commitments such as swimming, in which he has competed for many years making him build up drive and exigency to preform at a high level. - 4:42Light | Emily Mao | TEDxFDIS YouthEmily Mao delivered a heartfelt address at the event, weaving personal anecdotes and global examples to explore “light” as a metaphor for kindness and resilience. Drawing parallels between the animated film The Wild Robot, her piano mentor Alex, and activist Dolores Huerta, she illustrated how perseverance and compassion can illuminate paths for others. Her speech highlighted the transformative power of small acts—like a neighbor’s encouragement or a leader’s advocacy—to inspire hope and drive change. Emily concluded with a rallying call for attendees to embody these values, urging them to “shine brightly” by paying forward the light they receive. Emily Mao is a G3 student at FDIS. - 4:28Light | James Lin | TEDxFDIS YouthJames Lin reflected on “light” as kindness and knowledge, sharing how both illuminated his darkest moments. In second grade, a cruel class vote left him isolated—until a friend’s defiant kindness became his “small light.” By fourth grade, he paid it forward, guiding a struggling peer through math, proving even fleeting support can reignite hope. Emphasizing reading as a beacon for limitless learning, he urged others to “live as a light,” echoing Tagore’s wisdom: we never know who our glow might guide from darkness. - 15:00Safer (and more effective) chemistry starts with a bioinspired approach | Terry Collins | TEDxBostonCan we invent safer chemistry? Trace pharmaceuticals, pesticides and other everyday chemicals escape into wastewater, eventually making it into drinking water. These compounds are introducing toxicity to ecosystems and in some cases disrupting the endocrine systems of aquatic creatures. Even with wastewater treatment, drinking water supplies and food sources for humans and animals alike are facing contamination. Our solution sets to remove pollutants often involve using more water and chemicals to wash away or dilute problematic compounds. Natural systems have a more efficient approach. By mimicking nature, chemists have developed TAML catalysts to copy and intensify the natural metabolism of chemicals at a deployable scale. In a remarkably easy-to-apply technology, tiny amounts of TAML together with small peroxide concentrations create a reaction that can safely neutralize numerous wastewater pollutants in proportionally vast quantities of water. By fundamentally changing the approach, this new chemistry method has many potential applications and opportunities for global scale and impact. Terry Collins is the principal inventor of bio-inspired TAML activators, the most technically proficient homogeneous oxidation catalysts across both chemistry and biology. He created and followed for 40+ years an iterative oxidation catalyst design protocol that yielded the first TAML activator after 15 years; 30 years on, the protocol continues to advance TAML technical performances for myriad applications. Collins is the Creator-Founder of Sudoc, LLC, the global ambition, highly awarded CMU spinoff company that is scaling TAMLs commercially. Terry Collins taught the first university course at the Chemistry/Sustainability interface, iterating it over 30+ years for understanding and fixing unsustainability within the chemical enterprise. He sees endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) as a climate change scale existential threat and spends much of his time working through teaching, research, public service, and entrepreneurship to reduce EDC contamination of people and the environment.
