The Stories That Hurt Boys: Reclaiming Masculinity from Shame | Francesca Cavallo | TEDxPadova
Francesca Cavallo reflects on a moment that changed everything: the birth of her nephew. While she had once gifted her niece a mix of items from both the girls’ and boys’ aisles to celebrate her freedom, she realized she couldn't do the same for her nephew. That hesitation sparked a deeper inquiry into how our culture limits boys’ emotional and expressive lives from an early age. Drawing on years of work in storytelling and social change, Cavallo explores how fairy tales and cultural narratives shape boys into men who are disconnected from their emotions and constrained by shame. She makes a compelling case for rewriting the stories we tell about masculinity—inviting us to reclaim it as a space of joy, tenderness, and connection. Francesca argues that gender equality was never meant to be a war, but a journey of mutual liberation—and that we cannot build a better world without the full participation of boys and men. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
