Sekiz yıl önce, hastayken Jane Goodall'un In the Shadow of Man - İnsanın Gölgesinde kitabını okudum. Bu kitap sadece şempanzelerle ilgili bilimsel bir keşif değil aynı zamanda doğayla kurduğumuz bağın derinliğini keşfetmem için bir ilham kaynağı oldu. O gün, bir gün ben de şempanzelerle çalışabileceğimi hayal ettim. Yıllar içinde bu hayal gerçeğe dönüştü ve şempanzelerle bire bir çalışarak onların dünyasına adım attım. Bir şempanze kolunu uzatıp elimden muzu aldığında, bu yalnızca bir etkileşim değil aynı zamanda doğayla ve tüm canlılarla olan ilişkimin yeniden tanımlandığı bir andı. Bu deneyim bana sınırların aslında bizim yarattığımız birer illüzyon olduğunu, doğayla kurduğumuz bağın dönüştürücü gücünü gösterdi. Bu konuşmada, Jane Goodall'un mirasından ilham alarak şempanzelerle kurduğum bağın beni nasıl dönüştürdüğünü, insanın doğadaki yerini sorgulamanın neden önemli olduğunu ve tüm canlılarla birlikte var olabileceğimiz bir dünyayı nasıl hayal edebileceğimizi paylaşacağım. “Hayattaki tek mucize gençken iyi bir öğretmene rastlamaktır. Diğer mucizeler kitaplarda bulunur” Otuz yaşlarındayken bir öykü kitabımdaki bir kahramanın ağzından böyle yazmıştım. Bu sözüm çok sevildi ve o gündür bu gündür özellikle öğretmenler gününde pankartlarda, konuşmalarda kullanılıyor ve birçok gence ışık saçıyor. Çünkü bu sözün anlamı aslında bir altın anahtar gibidir ve bizi yepyeni ve güzel yollara çıkartacak birçok kilidi açar. Ve yine çünkü henüz kendi yetenek ve tutkularımızı henüz tanımayacak kadar gençken henüz ailemizin ve toplumun iyi niyetle de olsa bize nasıl yaşamamız, gelecekte ne iş yapacağımız, nasıl biriyle hayatımızı geçireceğimiz ve nelere inanıp neleri ve kimleri değerli veya değersiz bulacağımız konusunda rehberlik, yönderlik yaptıkları sırada karşımıza çıkan olağanüstü bir öğretmen bize aslında nelere yetenekli olduğumuzu, belki de bize empoze edildiğinin tam aksine konuları ve işleri çok severek ve hiç sıkılmadan yapabileceğimizi gösteriverir.
