Humanity's EPIC Journey to Mars | Erin Kennedy | TEDxMechanicsville

Embarking on an analogue astronaut mission at the Mars Desert Research Station, we tested a robot prototype destined for the south pole of Mars. What we discovered was far more than data, offering a glimpse into how humans and robots might work together on Mars in the future. Along the way, we learned the power of collaboration, persistence, and how even duct tape can lead to breakthroughs! Erin “RobotGrrl” Kennedy is an eccentric robot maker and analogue astronaut. She develops robots that address environmental challenges in creative, futuristic ways. Erin engages with environmental stewards of all ages by testing her robots outdoors in public, using a hands-on approach. Recently, she collaborated with the Transatlantic Mars Crew on an analogue astronaut mission at the Mars Desert Research Station, where she tested her wind-propelled robot, Atmosphinder. She learned to build robots unconventionally—through online resources and mentorship—which led to her studies at the International Space University. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
